Paleontology Summer CampOnly at Paleo Camp can children ages 6-13 visit an active fossil dig site and have the opportunity to dig daily to search for the next great fossil find at Gray Fossil Site. Get a behind-the-scenes tour of the fossil site, preparatory lab, and collections room, and discover your inner scientist. Additional activities include deeper exploration of geosciences, life sciences, and general sciences. Camp attendees will also have the opportunity to explore the museum and experience a private showing of HODC’s Guinness Record setting Tesla Coil Show and tie dye a Hands On! Children ages 5-12 can register for a 15-minute time slot to read to a trained listening dog. They read aloud in the Library's Storytime Room between 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month or from 4-5 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. In an effort to maximize the number of participants served by this program, time slots are limited to one per child for each event. Want to learn how to use the longsword? Here's your chance! We teach intro to longsword on the first Monday of every month. We meet upstairs at Mulligan's Irish Pub. Class starts at 6:30 pm. This event will be held on the first sunday of every month, with the goal of keeping Rocky Fork's trails and creeks free of litter. Meet Park Ranger Cory Franklin at the Park Ranger Station (280 Jennie Moore Rd.). From there we will go to our cleanup location. Rocky Fork has the cleanest water of any tributary in the Nolichucky River Watershed. With 2,000 acres of park land surrounded by 8,000 acres of National Forest. We aim to keep Rocky Fork pristine and would love to have your help! Gloves and trash bags will be provided but feel free to bring your own supplies. All ages welcome!

Johnson City will be the host site for an exciting water sports event when the Volunteer Wake Surf Classic 2026 arrives June 19-20 at Winged Deer Park on Boone Lake. Hosted by CBK Watersports as part of the World Series of Wake Surfing, the event will garner top amateur and professional wake surfers from across the country to compete. The two-day competition is free for spectators and will feature elite wake surfing action, boat demonstrations, and endless lakefront viewing opportunities.

Families are invited to the Children's Library one night per month for game night fun. The Library will provide board and video games to learn, play, and enjoy together. You can also try out the Library's new Infinity Game Table, a giant touch-screen packed with classics like Clue, Operation, and Candy Land. This event will also celebrate the parallel exhibition, Mosaic Mountain, an exhibition formed during a five-day art camp with middle and high school students. Renfrow was this year's featured artist, leading campers through their creations and inspiring them with her own artistry. "This exhibition brings together works that trace my artistic development from the smallest butterfly to the largest sun, reflecting the evolution of my approach over time," Renfrow says of her 25 stained glass works on display. Families can create and imagine together in a space where curiosity leads the way. On Friday, June 26, drop in for a fun, creative, and tasty activity! DIY edible terrariums feature pudding, crushed cookies, graham crackers, and candy layered to resemble miniature landscapes. (Please contact the Library for allergen inquiries in advance of programming.) Children ages 6 and under must be assisted by a caregiver while creating an artsy treat.
