Wildflower season is just around the corner! We will make our way down Rocky Fork and Flint Creek trails exploring the various early wildflower species. We will stop and explore wildflowers along the forest floor. On our hike we will see native wildflowers at various stages. Our goal is to hike two miles primarily focusing on the spring ground vegetation. $10.00 per person, sign up at the park website to reserve your spot!

The Department of East Tennessee (DET) will be invading Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site on Saturday, March 28. Have you ever wondered what camp life was like during the Civil War? Come and learn as reenactors from the DET camp, drill, march, and conduct weapons demonstrations. Visitors will be able to study how soldiers lived in camp, examine different types of uniforms, watch how soldiers drilled, hear the numerous commands of the officers, see the various weapons carried during the war, and so much more. Participants ages 6-14 can learn about their local history through historic-based crafts, games, music, storytelling, & nature with this immersive summer program for kids. The first week will center around the site’s Native American history, the second week will focus on the Revolutionary War and Colonel John Tipton, the third week will center on the Civil War and Landon Carter Haynes, and the fourth week will cover the Simerly family of the early 1900s. Families are invited to drop by the Library's Jones Meeting Center the second Saturday of every month between 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for Building with the Lions. You can build creations using LEGO blocks and other construction materials, which will then be displayed in the Children's Library. This program is facilitated by the Johnson City Lions Club.
In Art Explorers, children ages 8-12 learn about famous artists and their distinct styles, sparking discovery of art history as well as creativity. Young art enthusiasts will then complete their very own masterpieces inspired by that session’s featured art style. This winter, we will meet at 4 p.m. in the Library's Jones Meeting Center on the following Fridays: December 12, January 9, and February 13. They read aloud in the Library's Storytime Room between 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month or from 4-5 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. In an effort to maximize the number of participants served by this program, time slots are limited to one per child for each event. The session emphasizes 18th-century techniques with modern and colonial methods and guides participants through creating modern metalwork in the same vein as they did 250 years ago. What to expect: Working with a fully functional forge lead by Rocky Mount’s established Blacksmith. Learn how to craft unique creations in a similar vein to those from the 1700s. No registration is required for this drop-in event.

Join us each month for a ReadAloud at the awesome Philosopher's House! For this read-aloud book club, no one has to read anything in advance, and there's nothing to prep - just show up as you are, grab a snack or tea at the counter, and enjoy the weirdly wholesome community of a read aloud. I read the first part of a “classic novel” aloud for the group (one I've never read before!) - this would be perfect for listener crafts, mending clothes, or coloring books - but there will also be socializing before and after, and of course LITERATURE DISCUSSION (if you like).
