Andy Hedges Evening Concert at the International Storytelling Center

Andy Hedges is a songster, reciter, and guitarist. His varied repertoire includes classic cowboy poetry recitations, obscure cowboy songs, dust bowl ballads, and blues. The Lubbock, Texas native has always had an interest in poems and folk music from the old days of the American West. He taught himself to play the guitar when he was fourteen, then began collecting classic cowboy poems and traditional cowboy songs. Hedges has released ten albums. This month, they read aloud in the Library's Storytime Room between 4-5 p.m. on Monday, September 8 and from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, September 20. In an effort to maximize the number of participants served by this program, time slots are limited to one per child for each event. Join local volunteers as they demonstrate how sorghum is made by watching them cook down the juices into sweet molasses. The team will be showing the step by step process of making sorghum, including having a mule turning the mill. A biscuit and gravy breakfast with sorghum will be served from 8am to 11am. Also, enjoy the open historic house and explore the cave. Several local bluegrass and old time bands will be playing all day within the mid nineteenth century barn. Teen Zines: Empowerment and Peace of Mind

Ages 12-18 will learn about the history of zines as tools of empowerment, enrichment, and expression on Wednesday, November 19 at 6 p.m. in the Library's Teen Space. Chattanooga State Research and Instruction Librarian Amanda Roper will lead this talk on the importance of this medium, and you’ll create your own zine. All supplies will be provided.

On December 5 and 6 from 1pm to 5pm a guided tour through the home will allow you to learn how the Tipton and Haynes families celebrated Christmas during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Treats will be cooked on the open hearth of our cabin. Reservations for tours are appreciated. Regular admission is required. Members of Tipton-Haynes are also FREE!
