For this read-aloud book club, no one has to read anything in advance, and there's nothing to prep - just show up as you are, grab a snack or tea at the counter, and enjoy the weirdly wholesome community of a read aloud. I read the first part of a “classic novel” aloud for the group (one I've never read before!) - this would be perfect for listener crafts, mending clothes, or coloring books - but there will also be socializing before and after, and of course LITERATURE DISCUSSION (if you like). Book Worms is a program for children ages 5-8 to bridge the gap between preschool story time and book clubs for older kids. Participants will hear a fun story then take part in a hands-on activity that "digs in" to the text on the first Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. in the Library’s Jones Meeting Center. Families are invited to drop by the Library's Jones Meeting Center the second Saturday of every month between 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for Building with the Lions. You can build creations using LEGO blocks and other construction materials, which will then be displayed in the Children's Library. This program is facilitated by the Johnson City Lions Club.

In Art Explorers, children ages 8-12 learn about famous artists and their distinct styles, sparking discovery of art history as well as creativity. Young art enthusiasts will then complete their very own masterpieces inspired by that session’s featured art style. Ages 5-12 can embark on a prehistoric adventure with Hands On! Discovery Center on Tuesday, July 14 in the Library's Jones Meeting Center. Kids will learn about fossils and prehistoric animals (even ones that lived right here in Tennessee), then create their own using salt dough. Older participants will have the opportunity to explore ancient sediment for marine life. Fischman Gallery presents an artist reception for Holston Valley folk potter Rack Cross on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Front Gallery. Cross places pottery on the scene as both witness and evidence of the greatest transformation in the history of the Southeastern United States. The exhibition features a sample of wood fired salt glazed stoneware works examining how Appalachian culture adapted after modernization brought by the Tennessee Valley Authority Act.
