Emerging writers Molly Ann McDonough and Kayla Nichols will launch their debut poetry collections on International Women's Day at a special poetry reading and open mic event focusing on femininity at The Philosopher's House in Johnson City. McDonough's "Hope in Hateful Times" leans into familial tenderness, local belonging, and global class solidarity while Nichols' "The Stuff of Stars" is rooted in queer Appalachian identity and community cultivation. Families are invited to the Children's Library one night per month for game night fun. The Library will provide board and video games to learn, play, and enjoy together. You can also try out the Library's new Infinity Game Table, a giant touch-screen packed with classics like Clue, Operation, and Candy Land. The award winning StoryTown Radio Show will celebrate 15 years of its popular live production at the McKinney Center with a special Gala performance on March 23rd at 7PM. StoryTown is reminiscent of old-time radio shows popular in the 1930s-1950s, filled with actors performing local stories, complete with live sound effects created on the spot. Each show also features one of the top music acts in the region. The Radio Show has many surprises planned for its 15th season, which officially started in February. This event will be held on the first sunday of every month, with the goal of keeping Rocky Fork's trails and creeks free of litter. Meet Park Ranger Cory Franklin at the Park Ranger Station (280 Jennie Moore Rd.). From there we will go to our cleanup location. Rocky Fork has the cleanest water of any tributary in the Nolichucky River Watershed. With 2,000 acres of park land surrounded by 8,000 acres of National Forest. This event will be held on the first sunday of every month, with the goal of keeping Rocky Fork's trails and creeks free of litter. Meet Park Ranger Cory Franklin at the Park Ranger Station (280 Jennie Moore Rd.). From there we will go to our cleanup location. Rocky Fork has the cleanest water of any tributary in the Nolichucky River Watershed. With 2,000 acres of park land surrounded by 8,000 acres of National Forest. Participants ages 6-14 can learn about their local history through historic-based crafts, games, music, storytelling, & nature with this immersive summer program for kids. The first week will center around the site’s Native American history, the second week will focus on the Revolutionary War and Colonel John Tipton, the third week will center on the Civil War and Landon Carter Haynes, and the fourth week will cover the Simerly family of the early 1900s. Each week is limited to 25 participants. Each week, all campers will have the chance to play various games and work on various craft-based activities that relate to the week’s historic time period. This event will be held on the first sunday of every month, with the goal of keeping Rocky Fork's trails and creeks free of litter. Meet Park Ranger Cory Franklin at the Park Ranger Station (280 Jennie Moore Rd.). From there we will go to our cleanup location. Rocky Fork has the cleanest water of any tributary in the Nolichucky River Watershed. With 2,000 acres of park land surrounded by 8,000 acres of National Forest. This event will be held on the first sunday of every month, with the goal of keeping Rocky Fork's trails and creeks free of litter. Meet Park Ranger Cory Franklin at the Park Ranger Station (280 Jennie Moore Rd.). From there we will go to our cleanup location. Rocky Fork has the cleanest water of any tributary in the Nolichucky River Watershed. With 2,000 acres of park land surrounded by 8,000 acres of National Forest. We aim to keep Rocky Fork pristine and would love to have your help! Gloves and trash bags will be provided but feel free to bring your own supplies. All ages welcome!
Join us each month for a ReadAloud at the awesome Philosopher's House! For this read-aloud book club, no one has to read anything in advance, and there's nothing to prep - just show up as you are, grab a snack or tea at the counter, and enjoy the weirdly wholesome community of a read aloud. I read the first part of a “classic novel” aloud for the group (one I've never read before!) - this would be perfect for listener crafts, mending clothes, or coloring books - but there will also be socializing before and after, and of course LITERATURE DISCUSSION (if you like). Children ages 5-12 can register for a 15-minute time slot to read to a trained listening dog. They read aloud in the Library's Storytime Room between 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month or from 4-5 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. In an effort to maximize the number of participants served by this program, time slots are limited to one per child for each event. Want to learn how to use the longsword? Here's your chance! We teach intro to longsword on the first Monday of every month. We meet upstairs at Mulligan's Irish Pub. Class starts at 6:30 pm. All you need to bring is a pair of close toed shoes and some clothing you don't mind sweating in, and we'll provide the rest! Recommended minimum age is 14 years old.
