Laurel Falls

Laurel Falls is an exciting day trip outside Johnson City, with a moderate 2.6-mile hike through the lush rhododendron forests of Laurel Fork before reaching the 55′ waterfall.

To get there, drive east on U.S. 321 out of Hampton, TN for 0.8 miles. Turn right onto Dennis Cove Road, marked with a brown national forest campground sign. Continue about 4 miles from U.S. 321 until coming to a small parking area on the left for the Appalachian Trail. The trail to Laurel Falls is on the same side as the parking area and is easy to spot.

Much of the hike is fairly level, but can be rocky at times. The trail becomes more strenuous during the last 0.3 miles when you’ll encounter a long series of steps descending down to the base of the falls. Don’t worry, it’s well worth the hike as many consider Laurel Falls the most spectacular waterfall in all of northeast Tennessee. Just take plenty of drinking water and give yourself enough time to enjoy this breathtaking views before heading back!
