Rock has always been an incredibly durable, desirable, yet elusive
material for building. Masons from Ireland and Scotland migrated while using their ancient knowledge on American stones. Appalachia has an incredibly diverse history in stone masonry. Due to its fire-proof and age resistant properties many of these rock structures are still standing. Come learn the secrets of this age old art and carry on the legacy!
We will cover rock selection, mortar, shaping rock, and even some dry stack techniques.
Trained in Yancey Co, NC, by the master masons of the Civilian Conservation Corps, John Stiles has been laying rock professionally for 50 years. His work is showcased in numerous historic homes, courthouses, parks, museums. Now retired, John spends his working days consulting new masons, hosting educational programs, and continuing the legacy of “Old World Masonry”
Space Limited. If sold out, email Rocky.Fork@tn.gov to get placed on a waiting list.
