Fischman Gallery presents “The Long Road Forward,” featuring new work by painter Robert Phelps and photographer Monika Phelps, for the November exhibit. The exhibition explores themes of home, belonging, and renewal through two distinct artistic lenses. The husband-and-wife artists present two unique perspectives in dialogue, reflecting their shared love of Appalachia.
Robert Phelps, who grew up in Appalachia, returns to the region that first shaped his imagination. His dynamic, colorful paintings of animals—both wild and domestic—celebrate kinship and the energy of the natural world. Monika Phelps, originally from Florida, brings a fresh eye to Appalachian life through her atmospheric photographs that capture the area’s textures, from weathered barns and quiet cemeteries to wildflowers and mountain light. Although their mediums differ, Robert’s and Monika’s work shares a deep connection to place and the enduring spirit of the region. The title, “The Long Road Forward,” speaks to both their personal journeys and the broader Appalachian story—moving through challenge toward belonging, while honoring deep roots.
Monika Phelps is a visual artist and photographer, now based in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Known for her moody, quiet, and dramatic imagery, she captures spaces and subjects that feel suspended in time — from weathered buildings and shadowed graveyards to haunting floral studies and liminal interiors. Her work explores the lingering energy of place, evoking reflection and a sense of timelessness through stark contrasts and a limited, expressive palette.
