SUMMARY:5th Annual String Band Summit
DESCRIPTION:The String Band Summit (SBS) gathers artists\, teachers\, scholars\, and other music industry stakeholders engaged in string band music across the Americas to explore string band traditions\, histories\, practices\, instruments\, and pedagogy\, seeking to foster collaboration and understanding. The 5th annual SBS will be hosted by the Institute for Appalachian Music and Culture in the Department of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University April 9-12\, 2026. Participation by graduate and undergraduate students is encouraged. \nThe fifth annual String Band Summit takes place April 9-12 at various ETSU sites! Program\, registration\, and information here: https://www.etsu.edu/…/string-band-summit/sbs_2026.php \nStudents are free\, but please make sure to register!

SUMMARY:Off Trail Adventure Series - Firefly Falls
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Cory for an extreme off trail hike to Rocky Fork’s largest waterfalls\, Firefly Falls\, roughly 220 feet. This four mile trek follows Rocky Fork Trail and Flint Creek Trail before leaving the path for a rugged one mile creek walk into a remote and rarely seen section of the park.Along the way we will pass the abandoned Rocky Fork fish hatchery\, a glimpse into the park’s history\, before venturing into terrain that few visitors ever see.\nYou WILL get wet.\nParticipants should expect to walk directly through the creek during multiple crossings and during roughly one mile of creek travel. There will be two creek crossings each way\, and hikers should be prepared to navigate slick rocks\, uneven creek beds\, and downed trees from Hurricane Helene. Water may be up to a foot deep depending on conditions. Because of the rugged terrain\, this program is best suited for experienced hikers who are comfortable with creek walking and off trail travel.\nWhat to Bring:\nClosed toed hiking shoes\, boots\, or water shoes with good traction.\nWear something you do not mind getting wet.\nBringing an extra pair of socks is recommended.Warm layers as conditions in the gorge can be coolerWater and snacksA sense of adventure\nImportant Notes:\nIn the event of inclement weather the program will be canceled for safety.\nReminder:\nOff trail hiking is prohibited in all Tennessee State Parks (TCA 11 1 108). This ranger led program offers a rare opportunity to experience a remote part of Rocky Fork that is normally closed in order to protect the park’s natural resources.Directions:\nFrom Johnson City or ErwinTake I 26 South to Exit 43 and follow signs to Rocky Fork State Park. Turn right onto TN 352 and continue for six miles. Turn right onto Rocky Fork Road and follow for 0.8 miles to the gravel parking lot. From Asheville or Mars HillTake I 26 North to Exit 50. SUMMARY:Donald Davis Concert at The Jackson Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Donald Davis\, one of America’s favorite master storytellers\, is coming to the Jackson Theatre on April 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. The two-night concert will feature Davis telling different stories each evening.\nEnjoy two nights of stories from Donald Davis with general admission each evening being $16. A special group rate for 15 or more people is available for $13 per person.\nDavis was born in a Southern Appalachian Mountain world that was rich in stories. “I didn’t learn stories\, I just absorbed them\,” Davis says as he recounts tales learned from a family of traditional storytellers who lived on the same Western North Carolina land since 1781.\nDavis’ resume boasts numerous experiences including Davidson College\, Duke University Divinity School\, a retired Methodist minister and former chairperson of the board of Directors for the National Storytelling Association. He is a favorite at the National Storytelling Festival and has also served as a featured teller at the Smithsonian Institute\, the World’s Fair as well as festivals and concerts throughout the United States and the world.\nFor Donald Davis\, storytelling is a way of giving and living life. He invites each listener to come along\, pull deep inside for one’s own stories and personally share the common experiences that celebrate the creative spirit. For Donald Davis\, storytelling “is not what I do for a living\, but it is how I do all that I do while I am living.”\nFor tickets or more information\, call 423.788.4909 or visit thejacksontheatre.com for tickets.

SUMMARY:Climate Cafe
DESCRIPTION:What is a climate cafe? Climate-minded friends & neighbors who come together to share what’s important and to build a stronger\, safer world for us all! Climate Cafe occurs on the 2nd Tuesday monthly.\nLocation: Classroom/meditation space\, 2nd floor\nCost: Food and drink purchases encouraged to support teahouse nonprofit\nHow to register: https://linktr.ee/climatecafe_easttn\nInstructor Contact Information: Chelsea Green\, chelseagreencmi@gmail.comwww.anubeginningtherapy.com\nToo often\, our grief & anxiety around climate change lacks the community awareness\, support\, and rituals that would help us build resiliency. Now more than ever\, we need places & spaces to share our ideas\, our concerns\, our fears\, and our dreams. Gathering for these conversations helps us tap into a bigger network of support\, like the trees & mycelium share resources in their underground networks. Climate Cafes are free 90-minute gatherings welcome to all because we know that when we engage in meaningful conversation and action in the context of a community\, we grow our capacity to serve something bigger than ourselves. The Climate Cafe’s goal is to get more people together\, in more places\, talking about climate change in a supportive and welcoming space.\nThis event takes place on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at The Philosopher’s House in Johnson City\, Tennessee and is facilitated by Registered Climate Therapist\, Chelsea Green\, MA\, LPC\, CPA-NA.\nBeing human has always involved persisting through danger and uncertainty. By embracing our love for nature\, for all plants and animals\, and for humanity\, even in the face of great loss and pain our grief can empower us to fight for a better future for all.
