Are you eager to deepen your understanding of plants and their diverse forms? Look no further than NOLI’s “Introduction to Plant Identification”! In this course\, led by botanist Dr. Steven Price\, students will embark on an exciting journey through the enchanting world of plant identification. Whether you’re an aspiring botanist\, a passionate gardener\, an environmental enthusiast or simply curious about the flora in east Tennessee\, this course is designed to equip you with the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to confidently identify a myriad of plants.\nBy fostering a deeper knowledge of the plant world\, this course aims to inspire a lifelong passion for plants. By the end of the day\, students will emerge with a newfound appreciation for the botanical world and the skills necessary to confidently identify plants in their natural or artificial habitats. This course is your gateway to unlocking the secrets of plant identification.\nClass will be held at Rocky Fork State Park\, one of Tennessee’s most scenic and biodiverse parks\, and includes both outdoor classroom learning as well as application along adjacent trails. Cost is $75. Minimum age is 12. Price has a bachelor’s degree in Botany (1972)\, a master’s in Biology with an emphasis in plant genetics (1975)\, and a doctorate degree in plant genetics (1980). He has held positions at Standard Oil Company\, Iowa State University\, University of Wisconsin\, and Oklahoma State University as well as various consultancies around the world\, including The University of Tennessee. Steve holds eleven Plant Variety Certificates and one patent. In addition\, he has published over 40 papers\, book chapters\, and books on topics ranging from basic plant genetics to technology transfer and research policy. He and his wife are active photographers and have exhibited at art shows and galleries around the country. Or maybe you’ve already gotten some time on the trail but want to round out your knowledge. In either case we have you covered! Our comprehensive Backpacking 101 Class led by NOLI instructors Rob Schoborg and Michelle Duffourc introduces you to all you need to know to be able to hit the trail for multiple days so that you can extend your adventure\, access remote locations and experience natural wonders beyond those that a day hike affords. Topics include trip planning\, gear review and selection\, meal planning and everything else you need to know to head to the backcountry!\nClass is held at beautiful Rocky Fork State Park in Flag Pond\, TN. This is an overview course and does not include any actual backpacking. No equipment necessary but participants are welcome to bring any gear they have and will have the opportunity to get hands on with a variety of gear set up for demonstration.
