In order to really know the traditions and heritage of a region, you need to be able to sample the art, music, and cultural diversity of that area. Taking in the local art scene can truly tell you so much about the people and the history. This is deeply evident when experiencing the many galleries, museums, and venues available in Johnson City, Tennessee. Our region has a deep and honored history of art, music, and storytelling that has flowed down from our Appalachian Mountains and woven itself in the very fiber of our city’s growth into a central cultural hub for the region.

The Art Scene
Johnson City hosts several private and public art galleries that feature many of the region’s established and up-and-coming artists. With the support of many of our Universities and Colleges, the city has fostered and versatile and energetic art scene. Below are some great galleries and studios to consider as you plan your visit. Example Galleries and Studios
- Tipton Gallery – Sponsored by East Tennessee State University (ETSU), the Tipton Gallery is a fine art gallery hosting pieces from area artists for the public. Tipton Gallery is consistently updating and curating new installations, so be sure to make this a priority stop during your visit—it’s never the same experience when you come.
- The Warrior’s Canvas & Veterans Art Center – This unique art center is a non-profit organization in downtown Johnson City that supports and promotes local and regional Veteran artists. They also offer free art classes to Veterans and the family members as a therapy and outlet to share their experiences. It’s a tremendous experience to view the power of art through the eyes of our soldiers.
- Masterpiece Mixers Paint & Party Studio – If you want to have a more interactive art experience, consider participating in one of the many painting, sculpting, and woodworking classes hosted at this studio. It is a social event that makes art a central tool to have a shared experience.
The Music of Johnson City
With the legacy of landmark musical artists that have come out of the Central Appalachian region, it is no surprise that Johnson City has become a vibrant destination for a young and eclectic community of gifted musicians. Artists from every genre and skill level have helped grow a music scene that is growing exponentially from year to year. It’s easy to find live performances at local bars, clubs, and venues throughout the year.
Whether you are looking for traditional blue grass, country, and folk music—or are more interested in metal, punk, hip-hop, or indie music, Johnson City is producing some amazingly talented artists that you will enjoy. Below are a few venues to get you started on your musical tour.
Sample Venues for Live Music
- Down Home – Reviewers have called this music hall one of the best live music halls in America. Down Home is located in downtown Johnson City and hosts local and national bands from many different genres. Every weekend there are new artists to enjoy.
- Milligan College and ETSU – Two of the areas large schools host many classical performances, included our own Johnson City Symphony. Be sure to check the events calendars to find performances that align with your visit.
- The Hideaway – If you are looking for a vintage heavy metal and/or punk experience, this is the place for you. Great staff, amazing music, and an atmosphere that feels like it was plucked right out of the 1960’s California skater scene!
- Capone’s – Did you know that Johnson City has a tie to the infamous Chicago crime lord? In fact, during the roaring 20’s Johnson City was called by many “Little Chicago.” Well, Capone’s is one of the popular local landmarks that still offers that Chicago underground music experience. Check their calendar to find out what artists are playing during your visit and enjoy!

Our city offers many great performing arts experiences as well. From dinner theater to storytelling, Johnson City is a great place to stay and experience all that the region offers.
Great Ideas for Performing Arts
- Johnson City Community Theatre – As the longest running community theatre in Tennessee, this is a show that needs to be on your list. The performances here are fun for the whole family and will be a highlight of your visit.
- International Storytelling Center (Jonesborough, TN) – This is one of the largest and most well-regarded storytelling venues in the world. With a rich heritage of supporting the oral traditions from around the world, it’s a great place to visit and experience the beauty and power of storytelling.
