The Appalachian Trail The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, traveling through 14 states and over 2,100 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Katahdin, Maine. Though it hugs the North Carolina border for nearly 200 miles, the Appalachian Trail does not officially cross into Tennessee until it reaches the Nolichucky River outside of Erwin, at which point elevations frequently exceed 5,000 feet. With multiple access points surrounding the Johnson City region, take a hike on one of the most popular trails in the country!
