Watauga Lake

There are many water activities at Watauga Lake: power boating, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, parasailing, water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, and wakeboarding. Watauga Lake can be accessed at several public and private boat ramps and marinas for a nominal fee ($5 or less).

Liberty Bell Recreation Trail

Located next to Freedom Hall, this 1.7-mile walking and jogging trail circles the ball fields at the Liberty Bell Complex. Children on bicycles and inline skates are allowed, but adult bicycles are not allowed.

Laurel Falls

Laurel Falls is an exciting day trip outside Johnson City, with a moderate 2.6-mile hike through the lush rhododendron forests of Laurel Fork before reaching the falls. To get there, drive east on U.S. 321 out of Hampton, TN for 0.8 miles. Turn right onto Dennis Cove Road, marked with a brown national forest campground sign. Continue about 4 miles from U.S. 321 until coming to a small parking area on the left for the Appalachian Trail. The trail to Laurel Falls is on the same side as the parking area and is easy to spot.
