Outdoors
Need to escape to the outdoors? There is something for every adventurer in Johnson City. Walk, run or bike along Tennessee’s longest rails-to-trails project, The Tweetsie Trail. This trail stretches from Johnson City to Elizabethton so the pace and length are your choice! For more of a challenge, hike any of the eight trails at Buffalo Mountain Park, just minutes from Downtown Johnson City. No long ride back to relaxation after a day on this mountain!
For the serious adrenaline seeker, Tannery Knobs Bike Park is a must-do! Riders can experience the thrill of off road riding from the gnarly, rocky downhill of the Black Diamond to smooth dirt paths on the green trails. In the center of the 40 acre wooded park is a world class pump track; if you know, you know! Don’t worry if you didn’t bring your bike; rent one for the day at Trek Bicycle, where you also can get expert advice on riding the trails.
The unique location of this progressive, urban park makes for one of its biggest perks. At the bottom of this mountain lies the revitalized Downtown with a thriving nightlife. Visit JRH Brewing, Johnson City Brewing or Little Animals Brewery for a local craft beer or have dinner and a brew at Southern Craft BBQ with Great Oak Brewing. Hungry after a day on the trails? Downtown features great local restaurants including Holy Taco, Frieberg’s, Label Restaurant and Sabores.
Looking for a wet adventure? USA Raft on the Nolichucky River just outside of Johnson City has your number. This river includes class II, III and IV level rapids so the only question is “how wet do you want to get?” Experienced river guides offer unforgettable rafting with shuttle service back to the property. For a slower, more relaxing day on the water, tubing, kayak, SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) and fishing are also offered for those looking for a more relaxing day on the water.
Disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with the great outdoors in this welcoming mountain town!
