SUMMARY:Storytelling Live: Anne Rutherford
DESCRIPTION:A five-time champion of the Northwest Folklife Liar’s contest\, Anne Rutherford’s tales ring true even when they’re completely false. From personal stories to prize-winning lies\, she’s developed a wide-ranging repertoire over her 25 years of performing\, including first-person accounts from her Wild West alter ego Clementine Ryder\, who usually steals the show. Often accompanied by her mandolin playing\, Rutherford’s telling bubbles with humor\, heart\, and a desire to connect and share meaning with her audience. “Without you\,” Anne says\, “I’m talking to myself!” \nOne of the finest professional liars in the world. – Portland Tribune

SUMMARY:Starry Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:Experience Rocky Fork after dark on a guided three-mile hike through the Appalachian forest. We’ll listen for nocturnal bird calls\, search for salamanders and the ghostly glow of foxfire\, and use ultraviolet lights to reveal fluorescent lichens\, fungi\, and other organisms hidden along the trail.\nTaking place just after the new moon and near the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower\, this hike offers an excellent opportunity to experience one of the darkest nights of the year. Weather permitting\, we may even catch a few Perseid meteors streaking overhead.\nAlong the way\, learn how Rocky Fork State Park is working toward Dark Sky certification and help measure the quality of the night sky using a dark sky meter. At the historic Flint Creek battle site\, rangers will share stories of nocturnal wildlife\, frontier history\, and simple ways you can help protect the darkness.\nRed-light flashlights will be provided to preserve night vision.\nWhat to Bring: Closed-toe shoes\, water\, and warm clothing. Participants should be prepared to hike approximately three miles over uneven terrain after dark.\nDirections\nFrom Johnson City or Erwin: Take I-26 South to Exit 43 and follow signs toward Rocky Fork State Park. Turn right onto TN-352 and continue for six miles. Turn right onto Rocky Fork Road and follow it for 0.8 miles to the gravel parking lot.\nFrom Asheville or Mars Hill: Take I-26 North to Exit 50. SUMMARY:Frozen
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in forever\, experience the musical phenomenon that has taken the world by storm! Based on the Academy Award-winning animated feature film\, Disney’s Frozen includes all the film’s beloved songs by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez\, along with new music written exclusively for the stage. \nIn the beautiful mountainous kingdom of Arendelle\, Princesses Anna and Elsa grow up sheltered inside their castle\, isolated from the world and increasingly distant from each other. When Elsa is crowned queen\, the magical powers she’s desperately tried to conceal from her sister take control\, and she flees into the mountains. As a ferocious winter descends on Arendelle\, Anna sets off on an epic journey to find Elsa and bring her home – with the help of hardworking ice harvester Kristoff\, his loyal reindeer Sven\, and a happy-go-lucky snowman named Olaf. \nFull of magic\, humor\, and a stunning musical score\, Frozen is a powerful tale of sisterhood\, acceptance\, and finding the real meaning of true love. SUMMARY:Climate Cafe
DESCRIPTION:What is a climate cafe? Climate-minded friends & neighbors who come together to share what’s important and to build a stronger\, safer world for us all! Climate Cafe occurs on the 2nd Tuesday monthly.\nLocation: Classroom/meditation space\, 2nd floor\nCost: Food and drink purchases encouraged to support teahouse nonprofit\nHow to register: https://linktr.ee/climatecafe_easttn\nInstructor Contact Information: Chelsea Green\, chelseagreencmi@gmail.comwww.anubeginningtherapy.com\nToo often\, our grief & anxiety around climate change lacks the community awareness\, support\, and rituals that would help us build resiliency. Now more than ever\, we need places & spaces to share our ideas\, our concerns\, our fears\, and our dreams. Gathering for these conversations helps us tap into a bigger network of support\, like the trees & mycelium share resources in their underground networks. Climate Cafes are free 90-minute gatherings welcome to all because we know that when we engage in meaningful conversation and action in the context of a community\, we grow our capacity to serve something bigger than ourselves. The Climate Cafe’s goal is to get more people together\, in more places\, talking about climate change in a supportive and welcoming space.\nThis event takes place on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at The Philosopher’s House in Johnson City\, Tennessee and is facilitated by Registered Climate Therapist\, Chelsea Green\, MA\, LPC\, CPA-NA.\nBeing human has always involved persisting through danger and uncertainty. By embracing our love for nature\, for all plants and animals\, and for humanity\, even in the face of great loss and pain our grief can empower us to fight for a better future for all.
