SUMMARY:Barefoot in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He’s a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she’s a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find – too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six-day honeymoon\, they get a surprise visit from Corie’s loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic\, Velasco\, where everything that can go wrong does. Paul just doesn’t understand Corie\, as she sees it. He’s too staid\, too boring\, and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous. Running “barefoot in the park” would be a start…(From Concord Theatricals).

SUMMARY:Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at The Jackson Theatre
DESCRIPTION:September 17 — 7:00 PMDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932)\nSpeakeasy Cinema\nPay What You Can\nSpeakeasy Cinema Series – Doors open at 6 pm\, movie at 7pm\nJazz Music\, Specialty Craft Cocktails (and Mocktails) for purchase\nalong with our full selection of beverages at the concession stand.\nComplimentary light bites will we available.\n“I’ll show you what horror means” – growls the hideous Mr. Hyde\nDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story is one of the most enduring and classic ones in both literature and film history. When it was first published in the year 1886\, Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde aroused a storm of controversy. Quaint Victorian sensibilities were outraged by its premise that every human being has a demon lurking within\, longing to break loose and indulge in forbidden pleasures. By scientific means\, the tale’s protagonist\, the kindly Dr. Jekyll\, frees his suppressed self and plunges into an orgy of uncontrollable licentiousness that ends in an untimely demise. Although the motives and circumstances of splitting one character into two have changed from adaptation to adaptation\, the basic premise of the story is still compelling. This version is the first sound one (previous version from 1920 starring John Barrymore). It is an adaptation of two 1887 stages play by Thomas Russell Sullivan\, Luella Forepaugh and George F. Fish\, rather than the book by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is considered the best version of Stevenson’s classic; this 1932 film resulted in an Oscar win for actor Fredric March. Beautifully filmed by Rouben Mamoulian and well-acted across the board. It also features some stunning visual tricks and strong pre-Code sexual content.\nRated TV-PG\nRunning Time 97 minutes\nSpecialty Cocktail: The Mad Scientist

SUMMARY:The Local Honeys with Rebecca Porter at The Down Home
DESCRIPTION:We’ve got a great Wednesday night planned on September 16th with 2 returning favorites: The Local Honeys and Rebecca PorterThe Local Honeys blend traditional Kentucky music with modern soundscapes and original songwriting. Fuzzed out guitar and a vibey rhythm section set the sonic bedrock to showcase the entwinement of old-time banjo and fiddle styles at the forefront of their sound. The Honeys understand the complexities of contemporary Appalachian life and their music is reflective of such through raw and emotive songs. The narratives and perspective they weave into song\, the deep understanding and endearment they share for hillbilly music\, and their undeniable charm make it clear the duo is poised to become defining voices of a new Appalachia.Porter embodies the soulful\, lonesome sound of the Shenandoah Valley\, channeling raw emotion into every song. She transformed pandemic loneliness into two acclaimed EPs\, ‘Prime Rainbow Conditions’ and ‘Queen of the Local’\, and\, through pure independent hustle\, has brought her music to national audiences. In 2024\, she was honored as part of Rissi Palmer’s Color Me Country Class of 2024 and featured on NPR’s Mounting Stage\, cementing her place as a rising voice in Americana. Tickets: https://www.thedownhome.com/…/thedow…/logan-ledger-32w78

SUMMARY:Climate Cafe
DESCRIPTION:What is a climate cafe? Climate-minded friends & neighbors who come together to share what’s important and to build a stronger\, safer world for us all! Climate Cafe occurs on the 2nd Tuesday monthly.\nLocation: Classroom/meditation space\, 2nd floor\nCost: Food and drink purchases encouraged to support teahouse nonprofit\nHow to register: https://linktr.ee/climatecafe_easttn\nInstructor Contact Information: Chelsea Green\, chelseagreencmi@gmail.comwww.anubeginningtherapy.com\nToo often\, our grief & anxiety around climate change lacks the community awareness\, support\, and rituals that would help us build resiliency. Now more than ever\, we need places & spaces to share our ideas\, our concerns\, our fears\, and our dreams. Gathering for these conversations helps us tap into a bigger network of support\, like the trees & mycelium share resources in their underground networks. Climate Cafes are free 90-minute gatherings welcome to all because we know that when we engage in meaningful conversation and action in the context of a community\, we grow our capacity to serve something bigger than ourselves. The Climate Cafe’s goal is to get more people together\, in more places\, talking about climate change in a supportive and welcoming space.\nThis event takes place on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at The Philosopher’s House in Johnson City\, Tennessee and is facilitated by Registered Climate Therapist\, Chelsea Green\, MA\, LPC\, CPA-NA.\nBeing human has always involved persisting through danger and uncertainty. By embracing our love for nature\, for all plants and animals\, and for humanity\, even in the face of great loss and pain our grief can empower us to fight for a better future for all.
