SUMMARY:MARIA MULDAUR with special guest SUZY THOMPSON & OTHERS at the Down Home
DESCRIPTION:ETSU Bluegrass\, Old-Time\, and Roots Music presents:MARIA MULDAUR with special guest SUZY THOMPSON & OTHERS\nThursday\, April 9\, 2026\n7:30 PM – 10:00 PM\nTickets: https://www.thedownhome.com/…/maria-maldaur-w-special…\nThe Down Home300 West Main Street\, Johnson City\, TN\n\nABOUT MARIA MULDAUR\nFolk and blues singer Maria Muldaur was born as Maria Grazia Rosa Domenica D’Amato on September 12\, 1943 in Greenwich Village\, New York City. At age five\, Maria was already singing Kitty Wells’ “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels”\, with her aunt accompanying her on piano. Muldaur became an aficionado of rhythm and blues music in her teen years and formed her own girl group called “The Cashmeres” in high school. She eventually began participating in jam sessions in the Greenwich Village area and joined the band\, the Friends of Old Timey Music. Maria traveled to North Carolina and studied bluegrass fiddle with noted folk/country musician Doc Watson. She then returned to New York and became a member of the group\, the Even Dozen Jug Band. After that group broke up\, Muldaur moved to Boston\, Massachusetts and joined the Jim Kweskin Jug Band\, where she met her future husband\, Geoff Muldaur. After the group disbanded in 1968\, Maria and Geoff became a duo and recorded two albums on the Reprise record label. The couple split up both personally and professionally in 1972. Muldaur subsequently embarked on a solo career. In 1974\, she scored her biggest and best-known hit with the sultry song\, “Midnight at the Oasis”\, which peaked at #6 on the Billboard pop charts in 1974. The follow-up song\, “I’m A Woman”\, likewise did well. Maria has since gone on to record and release a slew of well-received albums throughout the years. Her 1992 album\, “Louisiana Love Call”\, garnered a wealth of glowing plaudits from critics and was named the “Best Adult Alternative Album of the Year” by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Moreover\, the 1994 album\, “Meet Me at Midnite”\, was nominated for the W.C. Handy Blues Award while the 2001 album\, “Richland Woman Blues”\, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. More recently\, Muldaur has specialized in tribute albums which include 2002’s “Animal Crackers in My Soup (The Songs of Shirley Temple)”\, 2003’s “A Woman Alone with the Blues (Remembering Peggy Lee)” and 2006’s “Heart of Mine: Love Songs of Bob Dylan”. Maria Muldaur released her latest album “Yes We Can!” in July\, 2008.\nwww.mariamuldaur.com

SUMMARY:ATMA Ensemble Concert
DESCRIPTION:ATMA was founded in March 2020\, during the height of the Covid pandemic\, as a response to the deep need for connection and expression during a time of global uncertainty. The name ‘ATMA’ serves as both an acronym for the Alliance for Tradition in Musical Arts and a reference to the Sanskrit word for “soul.” The group’s mission is deeply rooted in honoring the legacy of Indian ragas while infusing them with fresh\, passionate expressions that reflect both tradition and innovation. Through performance\, ATMA explore the soul of musical traditions in collaboration with musicians from many cultures. ATMA is itself a model of social and artistic connections and understanding between diverse groups of people – South Indian and Western (jazz) musicians. Traditional South Indian music develops from steady drones and wild improvisation. During a performance\, the pieces thicken and evolve to meet and elevate the energy of the evening.\nFeaturing principal violinist Aishwarya\, the group performs works that blend the range and style of Indian and Western instrumentation and whose insistent pulse provides the fuel for a moving experience. They invite you to embark on a captivating journey with them as they explore the intricate tapestry of Indian classical music\, jazz and beyond.

SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star Comes to The Jackson Theatre April 17\nThe Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.
